What is a fairy?

A fairy (fae/faerie) is an other-world being tied to land, threshold places, and the hidden layers of nature. In Celtic lore they’re the Aos Sí (“people of the mounds”), in Scotland you hear of Seelie/Unseelie courts, in Irish tales púca and banshee; across cultures there are close cousins: duendes (LatAm/Spain), aluxo’ob (Maya field spirits), chaneques (Nahua), domovoi (Slavic), álfar (Norse). The Old French faerie meant “enchantment,” from Latin fatum (fate)—hinting that fae work at the crossroads of nature and destiny.

What they are (ways people understand them)

• Nature intelligences: spirits of rivers, trees, stones, winds.
• The “older neighbors”: memory of pre-Christian deities/land guardians living just beside our world.
• Liminal folk: beings of thresholds—dawn/dusk, hill/valley, doorways, burial mounds, mushrooms rings.

How they show up

• Liminal spots (hedgerows, springs, mounds), sudden breezes, rings of fungi, uncanny luck or mischief, vivid dreams, “lost time,” small objects moved, whistles/chimes in still air.

Etiquette (if you work with them)

• Ask permission of the land. Leave simple offerings: clean water, bread/butter, milk, honey, flowers. No plastics.
• Keep your word. Fae culture is contract-based; don’t promise what you can’t uphold.
• Mind boundaries. Don’t trample rings, don’t take from sacred spots without a gift back.
• Iron & noise traditionally repel; use if you need space. Hawthorn/rowan are protective allies.
• Privacy: Many traditions avoid names; call them “Good Neighbors.” Don’t boast about workings.

Cautions

Fae aren’t “cute angels.” They’re morally other. Trickster energy is common; exchanges are real. Don’t ask them to harm people; keep your spiritual hygiene strong.
